If you're familiar with the 6 Core Principles of the Retirement Divas model, you'll remember that Rule #3 is "Never pay more than you have to... for anything." That rule applies to the software you'll need to run your business efficiently, cost-effectively, and as simply as possible.

I've spent a lot of time searching for tools to help me run my business that get the job done without costing me a fortune. I usually find the best well-known application, which is usually pretty pricey (think "supply and demand curves" from high school economics).

Starting with the platforms that seem to work well enough for large numbers of people that they're willing to pay big bucks for them helps me identify the features that I really need (or want) and those that are nice to have, but not worth paying extra for.

Once I've figured out the top two or three contenders, I start searching for free, open-source, or low-cost alternatives. Surprisingly, some of the bigger players have scaled-back free or almost-free versions available that they don't seem to advertise those plans as much as the paid versions for obvious reasons.

That said, beware of "Free" offerings. Sometimes they really are free, but many times "Free" actually means "Free Trial" or "Free for 30 days." Remember Rule #3, if a truly free product does what it needs you to do, don't pay for one that looks fancier or prettier but is full of features that you really don't need.

I've included a list of the tools I use to support my business below. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a willing partner with those that have affiliate programs, meaning that I may earn a small commission from the company if you make a purchase after following an affiliate link below. There is absolutely no additional cost to you for purchasing through an affiliate link, but just so we're clear, I've identified those links where they appear.
